Versailles & Chartres Cathedral Tour
Marvel at the splendour of the most famous château of France!
After visiting Versailles, you will travel deep into the Beauce countryside to the beautiful city of Chartres. Discover the 13th century Notre-Dame Cathedral with its 2 spires; one Gothic, the other Romanesque, and its exquisite stained-glass windows; it is of unrivalled medieval splendour. You will have free time to saunter through the charmingly preserved old town.
Versailles - commissioned in the mid-1600s by Louis XIV, the Roi Soleil (Sun King), this masterpiece out-dazzled every other royal residence in Europe. This excursion includes (unguided) access to the Grands Apartments , the Hall of Mirrors, and an outside view of the Grand et Petit Trianon . You will have free time to stroll the stunning French-style gardens, designed by André Le Notre. (The great fountain display takes place from Saturday 7 April to Sunday 30 September 2007. Every Saturday, Sunday & bank holiday (except 1 May) from 11.00 - 12.00, 15.30 to 17.00 & 17.20 to 17.30.
Chartres Cathedral - At the crossroads between Brittany, Normandy & the Loire Valley, the two steeples of Chartres Notre-Dame Cathedral rise majestically from the Beauce plaine like a mirage. The cathedral is an unrivalled medieval splendour, capturing the attention of the beholder. Beneath its flying buttresses beats the pulse of the old town. Winding streets with fascinating names, lined with old houses, steps that lead you down to the River Eure. (extract from Chartres Tourist Office booklet)
