In 1623, Louis XIII, father of Louis XIV the Sun King (Roi Soleil) built a hunting lodge in Versailles, a small castle for gentlemen. He enjoyed staying in Versailles so much; he decided to have the building rebuilt by the architect Philibert le Roy. The buildings around the courtyard are the old chateau of Versailles. From 1661 to 1668, Le Vau, Louis XIV s architect continued to embellish the chateau as the old chateau was considered too narrow, an extension was needed!
From 1668 to 1670 Louis le Vau took charge of the new construction. The enveloppe of Le Vau consists of a white stone fronted building which circles the old chateau the enveloppe of le Vau. The central terrace of the new chateau was inspired by the Italian baroques villa style. After Le Vau’s death in 1670, Francois d’Orbay continued the project. The Grands Appartements are housed here.
